TOAP Records was founded in 2001.
Led by musician André Fernandes and his brother Alex, TOAP has become a symbol of the contemporary jazz scene coming from Portugal, and a welcomed open door to many talented musicians from around the world.
Based on an artistic point of view, TOAP´s direction has always been that of recording and presenting the most honest and original music possible.
Most of the earlier releases were the works of young Lisbon based musicians that were just starting to establish themselves on the scene, and that are now major artists, working regularly all over the world. Names like Nuno Ferreira, André Fernandes and Nelson Cascais come to mind.
TOAP´s credit among musicians for being a label that believed in the music, independently of its commercial potential, led to more and more artists wanting to join the group of TOAP´s recording musicians. Now, TOAP is the home for many musicians like NY based drummer Dan Weiss, british saxophonist Julian Arguelles, Matt Renzi, Matt and Akiko Pavolka, André Fernandes, Demian Cabaud, and many others.
A recent partnership with the OJM Orchestra Association has led to the preparation of larger projects in the near future including the recording of the 3 Tenors program, featuring Joshua Redman, Mark Turner and Chris Cheek.
Also, an ongoing project with the Guimarães Jazz Festival allows for the TOAP Colective project to continue developing. TOAP Colective is a band formed by TOAP related musicians invited by André Fernandes to write an original repertoire and play it live at the Festival. The concert is recorded, and released the next edition of the Festival and every year the band is different. Three volumes have been recorded so far and the Colective has been represented by musicians like Ben Monder, Matt Pavolka, Alex Frazão, Matt Renzi, Jacob Sacks, Bernardo Moreira, Nelson Cascais, and others.
