After an all-original debut (Naranja) and a second album almost exclusively made of freely improvised music (Ruínas), it could be a bit of a surprise that Demian Cabaud, one of the most in demand bassists in Portugal, decided to get his fellow musicians into the recording studio and “simply” play a few standards. This is a no nonsense project though, for it’s what Cabaud and his bandmates do with these well-chosen classics that matters. The result is as fresh and invigorating as you could expect from a lineup like this. The music on How About You is absolutely of its time and the right place to hear two incredible groups (a pianoless quartet and a piano trio) simply doing what they love most and what they do best: playing some great jazz with unimpeachable devotion, a lot of heart and some sublime interaction. If that’s what you appreciate about jazz music, you will certainly want to listen to this one.
